Gravel is one of the most cost-effective and characterful driveway surfaces available, and it suits Suffolk's rural and period properties beautifully. It drains freely, is quick to install, and the satisfying crunch underfoot even adds a measure of security. As part of our driveway service, Garden Worx installs proper gravel driveways across the county — with the edging, membrane, and sub-base that separate a driveway that stays put from one that scatters and rutts.

A Gravel Driveway Done Properly

Many gravel driveways fail because they are simply loose stone tipped onto bare earth. A Garden Worx gravel driveway is built to last. We excavate the area, lay a compacted Type 1 MOT sub-base for stability, and install a weed-suppressing geotextile membrane. For driveways prone to migration, we can install a gravel stabilisation grid — a honeycomb panel system that locks the gravel in place, eliminating ruts and keeping the surface level and easy to walk and drive on. Finally, we add your chosen decorative aggregate to an even depth. Proper edging keeps everything contained.

Choosing Your Gravel

The aggregate you choose sets the character of the driveway. Golden gravels and Cotswold buff suit traditional and period Suffolk homes, while slate chippings and granite give a more contemporary, darker finish. Self-binding gravels compact to a firmer, smoother surface that is easier for wheelchairs, prams, and bikes. We will show you samples and recommend a size and type suited to your usage — generally 10-20mm angular gravel locks together better and migrates less than rounded pea shingle. We source all aggregates from trusted local and regional suppliers.

Drainage & Low Maintenance

Gravel is naturally permeable, so rainwater drains straight through it — making it SuDS-friendly and meaning it rarely needs planning permission. There are no puddles and no surface water running onto the road. Maintenance is minimal: an occasional rake to keep the surface level, a top-up of aggregate every few years, and the very rare weed pulled from the surface. With proper edging and a stabilisation grid, even that upkeep is dramatically reduced. It is an ideal low-fuss, low-cost surface for larger rural driveways.
