Block paving remains the most popular driveway choice among our Suffolk clients — and for good reason. It is exceptionally hard-wearing, available in a near-limitless range of colours and laying patterns, and individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if ever damaged. As part of our driveway service, Garden Worx installs block paving driveways throughout Saxmundham, Woodbridge, Framlingham, Ipswich, and across the county, always built on a rigorous sub-base for decades of reliable service.

Styles, Colours & Patterns

Block paving offers more design flexibility than any other driveway surface. Choose from traditional rectangular blocks, tumbled antique blocks for a softer period look, or large-format modern blocks for a contemporary feel. Laying patterns include classic herringbone (the strongest and most popular for driveways), basketweave, stretcher bond, and intricate circular features. We can incorporate contrasting borders, colour banding, and even house numbers or family motifs. Whether your Suffolk home is a thatched cottage or a sleek new-build, we will design a block paving scheme that complements it perfectly.

Built on a Proper Foundation

A block paving driveway lives or dies by its sub-base. We excavate to 200-250mm, lay and compact a Type 1 MOT sub-base, and add a sharp sand laying course before each block is placed and compacted with a plate compactor. Edge restraints are haunched in concrete to stop the blocks spreading under the weight of vehicles. Finally, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints to lock everything together. This is the difference between a driveway that stays pristine for 20+ years and one that sinks and ruts within a couple of winters — and it is why we guarantee our block paving for 10 years.

Permeable Block Paving Options

If you want the look of block paving without the need for planning permission, permeable block paving is the answer. The blocks are laid with slightly wider joints filled with fine gravel, allowing rainwater to drain straight through the surface into a permeable sub-base below. This meets SuDS requirements, prevents surface water running onto the road, and helps protect against flooding. It is an increasingly popular choice across Suffolk, and we install it to the same exacting standards as our standard block paving.
