Water brings a garden to life like nothing else — the sound of flowing water, the reflection of light, and the wildlife it attracts all create a sense of tranquility and connection with nature. Garden Worx designs and builds bespoke ponds and water features across Suffolk, from elegant koi ponds in Ipswich to naturalistic wildlife ponds in rural Framlingham. We create water features that are beautiful, functional, and easy to maintain.

Types of Pond & Water Feature

We build every type of water feature imaginable. Wildlife ponds with gently sloping sides and native planting provide habitat for frogs, newts, and dragonflies — Suffolk is home to some wonderful pond wildlife. Formal koi ponds require specialist construction with bottom drains, filtration systems, and adequate depth. Raised ponds built from brick or stone make a stunning architectural feature and are easier to maintain. We also install wall-mounted water features, standalone fountains, rill channels, and natural stream features. For smaller gardens, a self-contained water bowl or bubbling rock provides the sound and movement of water without taking up much space.

Construction & Filtration

Every pond we build starts with proper excavation and a stable base. We use butyl rubber liners for most pond construction — they are durable, flexible, and have a very long lifespan. For formal ponds, we sometimes use fibreglass or rendered blockwork. Filtration is essential for koi and fish ponds, and we install gravity-fed or pump-fed systems with biological and mechanical filtration. UV clarifiers keep water clear, and aeration systems maintain oxygen levels. We size every component correctly for the pond volume, ensuring long-term water quality with minimal maintenance. For wildlife ponds, natural balance replaces mechanical filtration — we select the right plants to keep the water healthy.

Planting & Landscaping Around Water

The planting around a pond is just as important as the water itself. We use a mix of marginal plants, deep-water plants, and oxygenators to create a balanced ecosystem. Iris, marsh marigold, water mint, and hornwort are all excellent choices for Suffolk ponds. Around the pond, we create planting zones that transition naturally from water to garden — moisture-loving plants near the edge, through to ornamental grasses and perennials further back. Combined with natural stone edging, timber decking, or paved surround, a well-designed pond becomes the centrepiece of any garden.
